در طول چهار دهه گذشته، انسان شناسان با رابطه دیالکتیکی بین بررسی فرهنگ ها از منظر امیک یا درونی و دیدگاه اخلاقی یا بیگانه دست و پنجه نرم کرده اند. این تنش خلاقانه در هیچ کجا به اندازه مطالعه انسان شناختی دین مشهود نیست. در این جلد، انسان شناسان و دانشمندان علوم دینی نه تنها با منظری که اساساً تغییر کرده است، بلکه با منظری که هنوز در حال تغییر است کنار می آیند. مقالات این مجموعه موضوعات جدید و مهمی را برای مطالعه انسان شناختی دین به شیوه های جدید و مهم مطرح می کند. در مقالات به شدت شخصی، تعدادی از مشارکت کنندگان به دو دغدغه اساسی در مطالعه دین می پردازند: (1) مردم شناسان چگونه باید با عقاید و اعمال دیگران برخورد کنند؟ و (2) مردم شناسان چگونه باید با پیشینه ها و باورهای مذهبی خود برخورد کنند. زیرا ممکن است اینها بر درک آنها از عقاید و اعمال دیگران تأثیر بگذارد؟ قبل از اینکه مطالعه انسان شناختی دین بتواند به سطح بالاتری برسد، حل نسبی برای هر دو سؤال ضروری است.

Over the last four decades, anthropologists have grappled with the dialectical relationship between the examination of cultures from the emic, or insider, perspective, and the etic, or outsider, perspective. Nowhere is this creative tension more evident than in the anthropological study of religion. In this volume, anthropologists and religious studies scholars come to terms not only with a landscape that has shifted fundamentally, but a landscape that is still shifting. Essays in this collection raise new and important issues for the anthropological study of religion in new and important ways. In intensely personal essays, a number of contributors address two fundamental concerns in the study of religion: (1) how should anthropologists deal with the beliefs and practices of others?, and (2) how should anthropologists deal with their own religious backgrounds and beliefs as these may affect their understanding of the beliefs and practices of others? A partial resolution to both questions is necessary before the anthropological study of religion can advance to a higher level.
