The International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament, which had previously held all its Congresses in Europe, went outside that continent for the first time in 1986 and visited the land where most of the events recorded in the Old Testament took place. The Congress was held from 24 to 29 August under the Presidency of Professor Benjamin Mazar at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the closing banquet was held in the Knesset. The Secretary of the Congress was Professor Avi Hurvitz, also of the Hebrew University, assisted by Mrs Janet Amitai with great efficiency. Those attending the Congress were given the opportunity to see places of biblical interest, both on a visit to sites of archaeological discoveries in Jerusalem during the Congress and on field trips and an excursion before and after. In addition, there was a visit to the Israel Museum and the Shrine of the Book, which contain so much of importance for biblical scholars. There were also invitations to visit the National and University Library, the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, and the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. As usual, scholars from many countries attended the Congress, and it was gratifying that a number from Eastern Europe were able to be present. This volume contains most of the papers read at the Congress. Professor James Barr's paper, "The distribution of plene and defective spellings in the Masoretic Text: its contribution to the study of text and language", does not appear here because its subject matter will form part of the publication of his Schweich Lectures at the British Academy in 1986.
