این جلد از کنفرانسی با عنوان نقشههای هارمونیک، سطوح حداقلی و جریانهای هندسی که در دانشگاه دو برتنی غربی از 7 تا 12 ژوئیه 2002 در شهر برست در بریتانی، فرانسه برگزار شد، ایجاد شده است. ما از بسیاری از ریاضیدانان برجسته از سراسر جهان استقبال کردیم و جلسه ای پویا با تبادل نظرهای مثمر ثمر برگزار شد. به منظور تولید اثری که ارزش ماندگاری برای جامعه ریاضی داشته باشد، برگزارکنندگان تصمیم گرفتند از تعداد کمی از شرکتکنندگان دعوت کنند تا مقالههای عمیقی پیرامون یک موضوع مشترک بنویسند. این مقالات تعادلی بین نظرسنجیهای مقدماتی و آنهایی که جدیدترین نتایج را که در مرزهای تحقیق قرار دارند ارائه میدهند. ما از این ریاضیدانان، همه متخصصان در زمینه خود، برای کمک هایشان تشکر می کنیم. چنین جلساتی به حمایت سازمان های ملی و جامعه محلی بستگی دارد و ما می خواهیم از موارد زیر تشکر کنیم: وزارت آموزش و پرورش ملی، وزیر امور داخلی، مرکز ملی تحقیقات علمی (CNRS)، شورای منطقه ای Bretagne، Conseil General du Finistere، Communaute Urbaine de Brest، Universite de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO)، Faculte des Sciences de l'UBO، Laboratoire de Mathematiques de l'UBO و Departement de Matematiques de l'UBO. حمایت آنها سخاوتمندانه بود و موفقیت جلسه را تضمین کرد. همچنین مایلیم از اعضای کمیته علمی برای مشاوره و مشارکت آنها در طراحی و تنظیم این جلد تشکر کنیم: پیر برار، ژان پیر بورگینیون، فردریک هلین، سیکی نیشیکاوا و فرانتس پدیت.

This volume has grown from a conference entitled Harmonic Maps, Minimal Sur- faces and Geometric Flows which was held at the Universite de Bretagne Occi- dentale from July 7th-12th, 2002, in the town of Brest in Brittany, France. We welcomed many distinguished mathematicians from around the world and a dy- namic meeting took place, with many fruitful exchanges of ideas. In order to produce a work that would have lasting value to the mathematical community, the organisers decided to invite a small number of participants to write in-depth articles around a common theme. These articles provide a balance between introductory surveys and ones that present the newest results that lie at the frontiers of research. We thank these mathematicians, all experts in their field, for their contributions.
