ویلیام بنجامین اسمیت (1850-1934) استاد ریاضیات در دانشگاه تولین بود. او همچنین Ecce Deus (https://archive.org/details/eccedeusstudieso00smitrich) و Der Vorchristliche Jesus، مطالعات مسیحیت بدوی را علاوه بر آثار ریاضی نوشت. این کتاب پس از مرگ در سال 1957 منتشر شد. او در پیشگفتار نویسنده می‌نویسد: «پس هدف این جلد این است که پیدایش جنبش مسیحی را به‌عنوان یک فرآیند تاریخی، طبیعی و معقول، هرچند منحصر به فرد، در کل قابل درک کند». در اینجا چند نقل قول از کتاب آمده است: «نویسنده انجیل چهارم... اهمیت چندانی به آنچه که هر بشارت دهنده دیگری ممکن است نوشته یا فکر کرده باشد، ندارد... گاه انجیل او وقایعی را تأیید می کند که گزاره های سینوپتیک آن را غیرممکن می کند؛ در مواقع دیگر ما ادعاهای مطرح شده را دیده ایم. در این انجیل اظهارات سینوپتیست ها را به پوچی تقلیل می دهد... از نظر خودش نه او و نه هیچ انجیلی دیگری تاریخ را ثبت نمی کردند، آنها آموزه هایی را ترسیم می کردند.» (ص 121-122). «به نظر می‌رسد که شرحی که تاکنون ترسیم شده است، نه تنها یقین عملی عدم وجود عیسی مسیح را به عنوان یک انسان نشان می‌دهد، بلکه همچنین منشأ و محتوای پروپاگاندا اولیه را به وضوح نشان می‌دهد. شاید بتوان گفت سرانجام در ابر پایداری که 1800 سال در مورد گهواره مسیحیت آویزان بود، شکاف ایجاد کرد.» (ص 123) «نتیجه اصلی از مطالعات ما در عهد جدید این است که اناجیل زمانی و تنها زمانی که به عنوان تمثیلی درک شوند، معنای کامل و مناسب دارند، و به صورت نمادی تنها بار پیشگویی عهد عتیق، استقامت شگفت انگیز، قرن به قرن را به تصویر می کشند. قوم اسرائيل در شهادت ثابتشان بر توحيد.» (ص 143)

William Benjamin Smith (1850-1934) was a professor of mathematics at Tulane University. He also wrote Ecce Deus (https://archive.org/details/eccedeusstudieso00smitrich) and Der Vorchristliche Jesus, studies of primitive Christianity, in addition to mathematical works. This book was published posthumously, in 1957. He writes in the Author's Foreword, "Such, then, is the aim of this volume, to render the Genesis of the Christian movement understandable as an historical process, natural and reasonable, though unique, throughout." Here are some quotations from the book: "The writer of the Fourth Gospel ... cares little or nought for what any other evangelist may have written or thought ... At times his Gospel affirms events which the Synoptic statements render impossible; at other times we have seen the claims made in this Gospel reduce to absurdity the statements of the Synoptists... In his own esteem neither he nor any other evangelist was recording history; they were painting doctrine." (Pg. 121-122) "The exposition thus far sketched seems not only to show the practical certainty of the non-existence AS A MAN of the Jesus the Christ, but also to exhibit with fair clarity both the Origin and the Content of the Primitive Propoganda, and so it may be said to make a rift at last in the persistent cloud that has hung for 1800 years about the Cradle of Christianity." (Pg. 123) "The main conclusion from our New Testament Studies is that the Gospels have full and appropriate meaning when and only when they are understood as allegorical, portraying in symbol the one and only burden of Old Testament prophecy, the marvellous endurance, century after century, of the Israel Folk in their steadfast witness for monotheism."
