A presente tese inscreve-se nos domínios disciplinares da história das ideias e da teoria social. O seu principal objetivo é repensar o modo de (re)produção capitalista a partir do legado conceptual e epistemológico de Karl Marx e da denominada Nova Crítica do Valor. Na 1.ª Parte são expostas detalhadamente as categorias da crítica da economia política marxiana da maturidade com base na literatura primária e na revisão da literatura secundária mais importante dos últimos 50 anos. Em particular, é evidenciada a identidade entre as teorias do valor e do fetichismo de Marx, assim como a sua relevância, juntamente com a teorização da crise, para compreender o capitalismo do século XXI. Na 2.ª Parte são discutidas as teorias de três dos principais autores contemporâneos pertencentes à Nova Crítica do Valor: Jean-Marie Vincent (1934-2004) no espaço francófono, Moishe Postone (1942-2018) no mundo anglosaxónico e Robert Kurz (1943-2012) no universo germanófono. Destacam-se entre as ideias fundamentais destes autores: i) A precedência da (re)produção social face à (re)produção material e a consequente refutação do “materialismo histórico”; ii) A crítica do “marxismo tradicional”, que apenas se apropriou da parcela “exotérica” do pensamento de Marx, e, por isso, apreende o capitalismo de modo truncado somente com base na propriedade privada, no mercado e na exploração, naturalizando o trabalho e a produção industrial; iii) A historicidade do trabalho enquanto categoria exclusivamente moderna; iv) A peculiaridade realmente metafísica do trabalho abstrato como substância do capital e, assim, como categoria constitutiva e mediadora das relações sociais burguesas; v) A conceptualização do capitalismo como modo de vida ou de existência social; vi) A prevalência, na modernidade, de formas sociais de fetiche (capital, mercadoria, valor, trabalho, dinheiro) que exercem uma dominação impessoal de cariz temporal, espacial e simbólico; vii) A superação da antinomia agência/estrutura através do entendimento das categorias mercantis como formas simultâneas de subjetividade e objetividade social e do recurso aos conceitos de prática, síntese social e constituição-fetiche; viii) A centralidade das relações de género para a reprodução social hodierna; ix) A fundamentação histórico-social do Estado, do sujeito de direito (indivíduo abstrato) e das formas de pensamento abstratas típicas do Iluminismo; x) O diagnóstico do limite interno absoluto do capital na sequência da de-substancialização do valor provocada pela revolução microeletrónica. Finalmente, na 3.ª Parte, após a crítica imanente de alguns postulados básicos da economics, da sociologia e da sociologia económica, são apresentados os prolegómenos de uma metateoria social crítica e reflexiva da modernidade capitalista. The way of sacrifice, or portrait of capital as a fetishistic social form – Rethinking capitalist modernity in light of the theories of Marx and the New Critique of Value. This thesis pertains to the disciplinary domains of the history of ideas and social theory. Its main goal is to rethink the capitalist mode of (re)production from the vantage point provided by Marx’s conceptual and epistemological legacy and by the so-called New Critique of Value. In the 1st Part the categories of Marx’s mature critique of political economy are presented in detail through the analysis of the primary literature and the review of the most important secondary literature published in last 50 years. In particular, it is emphasized the identity between Marx’s theories of value and fetishism, as well as its relevance, along with his theorization of crisis, to the understanding of 21st century capitalism. In the 2nd Part the theories of three of the major contemporary authors who belong to the New Critique of Value – Jean- Marie Vincent (1934-2004) in the francophone space, Moishe Postone (1942-2018) in the Anglo-Saxon world, and Robert Kurz (1943-2012) in the German-speaking universe – are discussed. Among the fundamental ideas of these authors stand out: i) The precedence of social (re)production with regard to material (re)production and the consequent refutation of ”historical materialism”; ii) The critique of “traditional Marxism”, which appropriated solely the “exoteric” layer of Marx’s thought, and, therefore, grasps capitalism in a foreshortened way only on the basis of private property, the market and exploitation, naturalizing labor and industrial production; iii) The historicity of labor as an exclusively modern category; iv) The really metaphysical peculiarity of abstract labor as the substance of capital and, thus, as a category that is constitutive of and mediates bourgeois social relations; v) The conceptualization of capitalism as a mode of social life or mode of social existence; vi) The prevalence, in modernity, of fetishistic social forms (capital, commodity, value, labor, money) that exert an impersonal form of temporal, spatial and symbolic domination; vii) The overcoming of the agency/structure antinomy through an understanding of capitalist categories as simultaneous forms of social subjectivity and objectivity and the deployment of concepts such as practice, social synthesis and fetish-constitution; viii) The centrality of gender relations to the modern social reproduction; ix) The socio-historical grounding of the State, the legal subject (abstract individuality), and the abstract thought forms typical of the Enlightenment; x) The diagnosis of the absolute internal limit of capital following the de-substantiation of value caused by the microelectronics revolution. Finally, in the 3rd Part, after an immanent critique of some of the basic tenets of economics, sociology and economic sociology, the prolegomena to a critical and reflexive social meta-theory of capitalist modernity are presented.
