Groups and Geometries: Siena Conference, September 1996

در 1-7 سپتامبر 1996 کنفرانسی در مورد گروه ها و هندسه ها در سیه نا زیبا ایتالیا برگزار شد. کارشناسان و ریاضیدانان علاقه مند از کشورهای متعدد را گرد هم آورد. برنامه علمی حول محور سخنرانی های نمایشی دعوت شده بود. همچنین اعلامیه‌های تحقیقاتی کوتاه‌تری از جمله صحبت‌های محققان جوان‌تر وجود داشت. این کنفرانس به طیف وسیعی از موضوعات در تئوری و هندسه گروهی، با تاکید بر نتایج اخیر و مسائل باز، مربوط می شود. توجه ویژه ای به تأثیر متقابل روش های گروهی-نظری و روش های هندسی و ترکیبی جلب شد. نسخه های گسترده بسیاری از گفتگوها در این مجموعه مقالات آمده است. این جلد در نظر گرفته شده است تا مجموعه ای محرک از موضوعات را برای طیف وسیعی از جبرشناسان و هندسه شناسان ارائه دهد. از جمله موضوعاتی که در کنفرانس یا این مجموعه مقالات ارائه شده است، جنبه هایی از موارد زیر وجود دارد: 1. طبقه بندی گروه های ساده محدود، 2. ساختار و ویژگی های گروه های نوع Lie در زمینه های محدود و بسته جبری با مشخصه محدود، 3. ساختمان‌ها و هندسه فضاهای برون‌تابی و قطبی و 4. هندسه‌های گروه‌های ساده پراکنده. ما از نویسندگان به دلیل تلاش آنها در ارائه نسخه های خطی به زبان لاتک سپاسگزاریم. باربارا پریویتزر و توماس هینترمن، ویراستاران ریاضیات Birkhauser، در تهیه این جلد بسیار کمک کننده و حمایت کننده بوده اند.

On September 1-7, 1996 a conference on Groups and Geometries took place in lovely Siena, Italy. It brought together experts and interested mathematicians from numerous countries. The scientific program centered around invited exposi­ tory lectures; there also were shorter research announcements, including talks by younger researchers. The conference concerned a broad range of topics in group theory and geometry, with emphasis on recent results and open problems. Special attention was drawn to the interplay between group-theoretic methods and geometric and combinatorial ones. Expanded versions of many of the talks appear in these Proceedings. This volume is intended to provide a stimulating collection of themes for a broad range of algebraists and geometers. Among those themes, represented within the conference or these Proceedings, are aspects of the following: 1. the classification of finite simple groups, 2. the structure and properties of groups of Lie type over finite and algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic, 3. buildings, and the geometry of projective and polar spaces, and 4. geometries of sporadic simple groups. We are grateful to the authors for their efforts in providing us with manuscripts in LaTeX.
