On August 7th 2020, rapper Cardi B released her smash single WAP, featuring Houston-born rap star Megan Thee Stallion. The song’s release was accompanied by a music video directed by Colin Tilley. “WAP” is an acronym for wet-ass pussy, which articulates an overt and incredibly self-aware song about women’s sexual pleasure. Featuring lyrics speaking directly about desiring oral sex (“He got a beard, well I’m tryna wet it / I let him taste it, now he diabetic”) and enjoying aspects of BDSM (“You can’t hurt my feelings, but I like pain”), Cardi and Megan refuse to constrict their sexual desires to innuendo. WAP is unmissable as a cultural artefact and miracle radio hit, but the aesthetic value and elaborate rollout of the video is what draws most of my attention. In the music video directed by Colin Tilley, Cardi and Megan wander around an elaborate WAP mansion, where they enter various rooms, changing outfits each time, all the while revelling in themselves and each other.
