The central concern of this book is the criticism of music—mainly but not exclusively Western tonal music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Criticism, Mr. Meyer argues, seeks to discover the secret of the singular—to explain how the patterns peculiar to a composition are comprehended by, and affect, the listener. Idiosyncratic relationships can be explained only in terms of general principles. Because such principles, as formulated in existing music theory, often are inadequate for Mr. Meyer's purposes, he proposes new explanatory hypotheses from time to time. Consequently, the book is theoretical as well as critical. In explaining the formal and progressive relationships of a specific passage, criticism indicates how phrases should be shaped and structures articulated—in short, how the passage or work should be performed. Thus, although the criteria for performance are implicit throughout the book, performance is the special subject of the second chapter. The third chapter concerns the significance of motivic similarities and, more specifically, the viewpoint of critics such as Rudolph Reti. The fourth chapter considers the nature of hierarchic structures—the ways in which form and process, continuity and closure, interact. The second, and most ambitious, part of the book attempts to establish a foundation for criticism of tonal melody. It analyzes melodic relationships as processes in which earlier patternings imply probable continuations and possible kinds of closure. Implications may be realized at once or may be delayed: the processes implicit in, say, the opening melody of a sonata-form movement may not be satisfactorily formulated until the recapulation or even the coda. The discussions, copiously — illustrated, assume some familiarity with musical notation. Given such familiarity, a wide range of readers interested in music, aesthetics, or criticism should find Mr. Meyer's ideas and analyses both stimulating and suggestive.
